October 2026  ·  Emmanuel Community

Dear Friend,

Happy October, the month of many great saints!

This is a big month for our Community. Our 2026 National Gathering will be live streamed for those who cannot join us, and our St. Margaret Mary Relics Tour with the Emmanuel Community is underway. Please pray for these two great missions.

Below you will find encouraging testimonies from Cissy and Bas, who share about a beautiful evangelization project they started in the Twin Cities, and from Laure, who shares about what the Community has meant in her life. As we draw near to our National Gathering on the Holy Spirit and Mission, we also look at what our founder, Pierre Goursat, had to say about the Holy Spirit, and we invite you into the Rekindle section. Be sure to listen to our song of the month and to send us any prayer requests you might have.

The Emmanuel Community is a family of Catholics from every walk of life, including laypeople, families, singles, and priests, who have found that the Lord is alive and working in ordinary lives. Three gifts shape everything we do.

Our charisms

Three gifts for everyday life

Adoration

Time in the presence of Jesus quiets the noise and teaches us to listen. Many of us find that an hour before the Lord steadies the whole week.

Compassion

Love that moves toward the person who is hurting, lonely, or overlooked. Prayer becomes visits, meals, and listening, and our own hearts soften along the way.

Evangelization

The joy of knowing Christ is meant to be passed on. We share it simply, through friendship, testimony, and invitation.

Relics of St. Margaret Mary

The Relics Tour has begun in Massachusetts

On this Memorial of St. Faustina Kowalska, October 5, 2026, our Relics Tour sets out from Massachusetts. Fr. Sean will accompany the relics on their journey, carrying with them a message of trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the fountain of Divine Mercy, whose heart pours out love and forgiveness upon the whole world. He will remain with the relics until the National Gathering, where he will meet us and share all that God has done along the way.

Share what God is doing in your life

When we speak about a healing, a conversion, or a quiet moment of grace, hope spreads.

God is already at work in your life, in ways large and small. Each time we name what He has done and say it out loud to a friend, our own faith grows stronger and someone else is given courage. An Underground River: One Woman's Journey to Emmanuel

In Laure's testimony, she shares her journey from a childhood marked by faith at the margins and family brokenness to a life fully given to Christ. A retreat, a First Communion at sixteen, and eventually marriage and motherhood led her, not to the religious life she once imagined, but to the Emmanuel Community, where she discovered that ordinary family life could become her own path to holiness. Through prayer meetings in France, long-distance encouragement from community members while adjusting to life in the US, and the steady healing of old wounds, Laure describes God's grace as "an underground river," quietly sustaining her through every season. Her story is a beautiful reminder for all of us: wherever we find ourselves, married or single, newly arrived or long-rooted, the Lord is present, healing, and inviting us deeper into the mission He has for us.

Recently, Laure's article in The Word Among Us struck a chord with readers. Since it was published, we have received several inquiries through our website from people moved by her words and eager to learn more about the Emmanuel Community. She will be sharing her testimony with us at the National Gathering.

"The Journey Matters More Than the Performance"

In Saint Paul, Minnesota, Bas and Cissy Suijkerbuijk have spent the past two years watching a small idea grow into ARISE!, a musical theatre ministry now touching the lives of around 100 children and young people. What began in October 2024 with eighteen children preparing a Christmas musical has become a full community of families, complete with a local leadership team, a youth choir, summer camps, and visiting missionaries from KOEMI in the Netherlands. But as Bas and Cissy remind us, the performance was never the point: the real mission happens in the weeks of rehearsing, praying, and growing together along the way, culminating each time in real encounters with Christ through Adoration, confession, and community. As ARISE! now prepares its biggest project yet, a full intergenerational production of "Francis: A Family Musical" in June 2027, their story is a beautiful witness to what happens when we say yes to the mission God places before us, trusting that, as they put it, "nothing belongs to us... everything belongs to Him." Let's hold this growing mission in prayer as it continues to bear fruit for the Kingdom.

Emmanuel Community: Rekindling our call

Born of the Spirit: the beginning of the Emmanuel Community

The Emmanuel Community began in February 1972, when a Parisian layman named Pierre Goursat and a small circle of friends received what the Catholic Charismatic Renewal calls the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

A layman

Pierre Goursat, born in Paris on 15 August 1914, was not a priest or a religious. The Community's Guide describes him as "a layperson who had offered his life to God in celibacy" by a private vow. He lived a simple, poor life of charity toward those around him, and he loved the Church and Our Lady.

He "offered himself in Adoration and allowed himself to be set on fire by God's love, flowing from the Heart of Christ." That long, quiet preparation matters. When the Spirit came in 1972, he found a man already given to prayer, poverty and service.

February 1972: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

On the weekend of 12–13 February 1972, Xavier and Brigitte Le Pichon, who had discovered the Charismatic Renewal in the United States, shared their experience with about forty people at Father Henri Caffarel's prayer house in Troussures. Pierre Goursat, then 57, was among them, along with Dr. Martine Laffitte.

The Community's own account says that Pierre and Martine "received a powerful and straightforward fraternal communion simultaneously: they recognized themselves as brother and sister." They began to pray together every day.

The outpouring of the Spirit is "an opening of the heart to the Holy Spirit in whom we place our whole lives for His direction." It is "above all an initiative by God by which He manifests Himself in a special way as a living person close to us." Those who receive it "discover or rediscover the meaning of their baptism and their confirmation." The Guide states plainly that "the Community was born from this experience of the Spirit."

From prayer group to Community, 1973–1976

The growth was quick and unplanned. Pierre and Martine's prayer meetings drew more and more people. The group grew to about 500, and then divided and re-formed under the name "Emmanuel," which the members say they "received in prayer" as meaning "God with us" (Is 7:14; Mt 1:23).

  • 1973The first prayer group takes the name Emmanuel.
  • 1974Some members want a deeper shared life, and the first household opens, with Pierre among its residents.
  • 1976After a September retreat "almost everyone wanted to continue," and the Community was officially born. Members kept their own homes but took on "common and regular commitments."

The first members were lay people, married and single. Priests and consecrated members joined later, and the Guide now describes a Community of "all the states of life" living in communion.

Paray-le-Monial: the heart of Emmanuel

In the summer of 1975 Pierre organized a gathering of Charismatic Renewal groups at Paray-le-Monial, the town where Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque three hundred years earlier. The Community came to see that "Paray-le-Monial must become his heart."

The Guide recounts that Pierre once told the mystic Marthe Robin that Paray-le-Monial would be the centre of Emmanuel. She answered: "Say rather its heart!"

The Guide says this was no accident. Paray, it explains, gathers the Community's grace: the Incarnation, the Eucharist, adoration, compassion and evangelisation, "openness to the Holy Spirit" and the call to witness to mercy. It also calls Paray "a very special place for the outpouring of the Spirit," where many have received it and then carried the work of the Spirit around the world. It describes Paray as a Trinitarian place, where one discovers "the love of the Father, the gift of the Son and the fire of the Spirit."
